The real problem is that, since all of that stuff is also in the smaller Pixel 4, its battery life is even worse. Outside the library, we dialed the zoom up to 2x on both handsets to capture a close-up on a pair of street signs. If you notice that in your own shots, it's a sign that you should probably switch over to Night Sight. There's also a revamped design and upgraded internals, all of which come together to create an enticing overall package. That said, this is another situation where you might be hard-pressed to spot the difference. All it takes is a split second and the right angle. Powerful controls let you manipulate the color and exposure of the different elements in your picture. No Battery 2,800 mAh Battery life 8:03 Colors Just Black, Clearly White, Oh So Orange limited edition Size 5. So you won't want to leave Live Caption on indefinitely. Furthermore, with a lot of apps still not supporting the Pixel 4's face unlock, you could easily make the argument that the Pixel 3's fingerprint sensor is more useful. Recorder is a voice recorder with live transcription, classification and searchable sounds. In an age when high-end phone makers are finally listening to consumers and sacrificing some thinness for much-needed endurance, Google is still inexplicably reluctant to follow suit. And that smattering of other stars filling the top half of the frame? In a side-by-side test, the Pixel 3 and Pixel 4 set timers and started playing YouTube videos at almost the same time when asked. The introductory drop, due out in December, adds enhancements to Duo video calls, memory management improvements, the ability to add bokeh into old portraits via the Photos app and automated Call Screen using the Google Assistant. I don't think Google has ever been this ambitious with a pair of Pixels before, and if some of its gambles pay off, there's a chance the company could reshape what it means to use a smartphone entirely. As you push that text up and down, the display knows to repaint the screen 30 more times per second than it would if it was sitting idle. It's here, and guys, it's fantastic. On the other hand, the Pixel 4 photos generally had deeper, more appealing colors, but they're a little less true to life. Free 2-day shipping or pick up today at a Verizon Wireless store near you. Not only is the more secure than the average bear, but it goes beyond the lock screen. Well, Motion Sense is ambitious and has immense potential, even though it occasionally falls short of Google's promises. As a great philosopher didn't say — you do you, boo! In fact, the rear of this Pixel seems especially sparse now that Google has ditched the capacitive fingerprint sensors of previous iterations in favor of Face Unlock. Sometimes, though, Motion Sense just doesn't work. Google also added two new exposure control sliders so you can more easily give your photos the tone you're looking for. Despite all that, I can't help but love these phones, for their clean, clever software, their weird cameras and their ambition. Both models use a wider 19:9 , with the Pixel 4 using a 5. In most of my test shots, the 11 Pro did a better job of capturing detail. Otherwise, both models have the same specs and cameras, and are available in the same selection of colors: Just Black, Clearly White and limited-edition Oh So Orange. When you're shooting with that main camera, you'll find slightly more detail and more even exposure, so bright patches of sky aren't completely blown out. The Pixel 4's battery life is not only worse than the Pixel 3's; it's well off the longevity of the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and Galaxy S10. That coating also means, like the , some Pixel 4s are nearly impervious to greasy fingerprints. They both pack two rear cameras framed by a big black square, they have little pops of color on their power buttons and there's a new, limited-edition Oh So Orange finish that just looks fantastic. Face Unlock is in need of a fix. The Pixel 4 includes dual rear-facing cameras located within a raised square module. This is still the weaker of the two cameras. Outside, the display would generally take on a cooler cast. For a phone with a secondary telephoto lens, the Pixel 4's approach is unconventional. The camera rivalry between these two companies has never been fiercer, and as always, I think the answer to which of these cameraphones are better boils down to personal taste. And then there's Night Sight's astrophotography mode. After all, the best devices are only as good as the network that supports them. That said, the Pixel 4 continues to perform admirably at long range, with results very close to the top performers in many examples. What the benchmarks don't tell you is that the Pixel 4 has an all-new coprocessor — the Pixel Neural Core — joining the Visual Core and Titan M security chip. What is Soli and what does it do? Motion Sense can be used for detecting a user's proximity to the device to activate the always-on display or power the screen on, and waving gestures that can be used in supported apps such as skipping tracks in the music player, and an interactive demo app. It may not be the color for everyone, but its bright, vibrant nature definitely allows it to stand out the most from the other colors being offered. But there are other aspects to be excited about, too, like an intuitive, time-saving, secure Face Unlock system and a tantalizingly smooth 90-Hz display. A minor loss of fine detail and softer edge definition is sometimes evident at close inspection compared to such top devices as the P30 Pro, however. The Pixel 4's design doesn't match Apple's, but it is delightfully weird — and damn, if there isn't space in this oversaturated market for weird. That's not really possible on a Pixel 4 right now unless you enable Continued Conversations in your Google settings. Still, it was better than the Pixel 4's anemic 8 hour, 3 minute average. Apart from a handful of quirks, the Pixel 4 cameras are easily my favorite of all the Android phones I've tested this year. At the same time, if you're a self-proclaimed techie and love having the latest and greatest, the Pixel 4 aims to please. In the case of upgrading to the Pixel 4 from the Pixel 3, most people are probably fine to sit this one out and wait and see what Google has to offer with the Pixel 5 in 2020. The difference can be subtle, and some apps don't support such high refresh rates, but it's hard to unsee the effect. Google claims the Pixel 4 can capture 8x zoom at near-optical quality. Image credit: Tom's Guide Sure, the main sensor is still rated at 12. Next, my colleague Phil and I took to Bryant Park on a chilly, dreary fall day to snag a pair of portraits using each phone's bokeh mode. But, as I said, you could find ways to get by. There's more: Google worked with The Pokemon Company on a cute motion-sensitive demo with the Sword and Shield starters, which you can set as a wallpaper if you don't mind burning through your battery. Huawei P30 Pro, crop, good exposure, well-controlled noise Video scores explained With an overall Video score 101 points, the Google Pixel 4 is the joint leader in our video ranking, sharing the top spot with the Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ 5G. What's most curious about a Pixel 4 is that it will actually respond when you wave at it. The Pixel 4 is the kind of device Mountain View excels at making, and it's easily one of the of the year, annoyances aside. Face Unlock on the Pixel 4 even works while your eyes are closed, though Google has come under scrutiny for this; the company is working to deliver an optional setting in an update that. And yet, a state-of-the-art handset doesn't mean much if it doesn't last long enough on a charge, has a display that's too dim to read outdoors and offers limited storage without the fallback of a cloud-based solution. Image credit: Tom's Guide That last point is critical, because the Pixel 4 marks Live Caption's debut. Still, I love the irony that Google -- a company that tries hard to automate the process of taking great photos -- decided to give users more control. Right off the bat, one of the big draws to the Pixel 4 is its display. In general, I could count on this bigger Pixel to get me through a full workday plus most of an evening without too much stress. They were bound to be a little awkward, sure, but they get enough right that they're worth embracing, shortcomings and all. I like the playful, lighthearted contrast of the Clearly White colorway, which combines a frosted Gorilla Glass 5 back with a powdered black aluminum frame and a traffic-cone orange power button. If you experience a manufacturing defect within 90 days from the date of purchase and activation of Verizon service, Verizon will replace it with a comparable unit. It's one of those things you have to see in person to really understand what we're talking about, but once you do, you'll never want to go back to a traditional 60Hz setup ever again. Sure, the back glass looks good, but it takes just one good drop for it to become a shattered mess. The option is a little out of the way, but without it, the Assistant listens for and acts on one command at a time and doesn't keep listening for follow-ups. The power button is accented and made from. Google has yet again put on another master class in doing more with less and building a handset that's far greater — and smarter — than the sum of its parts. These are some of the biggest upgrades we've ever seen for the Pixel lineup, and as such, we have a lot to talk about. We'll email you when your order's ready and then hold it at the store for 3 days. When it happens, these gestures start to feel like the most natural things in the world. Numbers closer to zero are better. Only during changes of did we see some instabilities during convergence. Of course, there's more than one way to interact with your phone without touching it. Dynamic range is more limited in the highlights in very challenging scenes, however, with bright areas noticeably clipped. Plus, the battery is even a bit bigger. Google released a fix for this in the November 2019 update. Since Google seems to consider Motion Sense a big part of what makes its new Face Unlock so fast, it seems appropriate to discuss it here. The Pixel 4 remains slightly behind such recent top performers as the Huawei Mate 30 Pro 121 points , largely due to the lack of both an ultra-wide camera and a time-of-flight ToF sensor. First, there are far more stars than I expected -- you can see the bottom of Orion in the top-left corner, and the constellation's belt of bright stars appear much brighter here than they did in person. Because any other phone you exchange it for will be better. In a nutshell, it adds some small, noteworthy improvements but feels unfinished in many areas, particularly with Google's piecemeal approach to Dark Theme and the absence of Live Caption. During that time, I was smoking, trying to stay warm and frequently looking back at the Pixel to make sure its tripod hadn't toppled over. Even better, those transcripts are indexed almost instantly, so you can search for keywords and phrases without having to scrub through minutes of audio. When you do either, you'll see a subtle glow move across the top edge of the display, indicating that the Soli radar sees your hand and recognizes its placement. All you need to do is pick your devices, go to cart and checkout, we'll run your credit before you confirm your order. Even so, it's a valuable start, not to mention a big help for people who can't hear well. Fast and accurate autofocus ensures in-focus shots in all lighting conditions, and the level of detail is good in outdoor and indoor images, with intricate areas well-defined. But step outside on a sunny day, and you'll have a much harder time reading the Pixel 4's screen. Long story short, the feature is accessible through the volume menu, and after a single tap, the Pixel starts displaying instant subtitles for whatever video, podcast or audio recording I was listening to. The radar chip knows when you reach for the Pixel 4, so it's ready to identify you before you wake it. I occasionally saw a few misinterpretations, and the feature doesn't seem to work for most kinds of music. Well, in this case, Google's definition is that you don't have to be clutching your Pixel to actually use it. One more thing on the design front: While there are only three color options for the Pixel 4, Google deserves kudos for sweating the details and differentiating materials between them. Image credit: Tom's Guide On the backside, you won't find glass polished to look like metal that catches spectrums of light in hypnotic rays — just plain old solid colors. You'll find a few more in the gallery below. Let's not forget that Google decided it would be appropriate to pack a 2,800mAh battery into a phone with components that suck extra power. I find it's easiest to spot when I'm reading long stretches of text or I've fired up a compatible game. To make things more exciting, Best Buy is also offering discounts on the , as well as on a couple bundles that include a Google WiFi System. Living with the Pixel 4 is doable if you find times throughout your day to plug it in, and I guess in 2019 that's not an unreasonable possibility. Yet, in doing so, Google forgot to execute all the basics. There are a lot of options out there when it comes to things like cases, screen protectors, etc. We do have some concerns about the batteries being used, but at the end of the day, this is a well-fleshed-out offering. It's ironic, because Google is executing all the high-level, machine-learning stuff far better than its contemporaries. Because of that, I don't feel like I can rely on Motion Sense, even though I want to. Pixel historians may remember Google has a spotty track record when it comes to smartphone screens looking at you, , but these are the most impressive displays on a Google phone to date. It has an all-new 90Hz display, Motion Sense hand gestures, powerful face unlock, and dual rear cameras. Naturally, this means that the Pixel 4 scores a little lower for texture than most direct competitors, with a particular lack of fine detail in low light, but it makes up for it in almost all remaining test categories. At just 429 nits through our light meter, Google's flagship is merely a candle compared with the white-hot intensity of the iPhone 11 Pro's category-leading 752-nit reading. The Soli-powered face unlock is extremely fast and secure. You can see in this reasonably bright indoor example below that the Pixel 4 offers much better brightness and detail for the darker skin tones and on the long-sleeved t-shirt of the model on the left. Prepaid Device Unlocking Policy Devices that you purchase from Verizon and certain devices purchased from our retail partners are locked for 60 days after activation. Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ 5G, noticeable highlight clipping In very high-contrast scenes, the Pixel 4 continues with good detail in the shadow regions. Lastly, you can see me clearly sneaking a cigarette among some beach debris. Better displays As usual, there's a significant size difference between the two new Pixels. Along with what's essentially the same 12-megapixel camera found on the Pixel 3, the Pixel 4 also has a 16-megapixel telephoto sensor. Just like you would with a fingerprint sensor, you can use face unlock on the Pixel 4 to log in to secure apps and authorizing purchases. These displays are largely great, but I do have one serious gripe: They're not quite bright enough. The battery life I've gotten out of these phones is at the low end of acceptable. With this year's , Google is charting a new path for itself. The iPhone 11 Pro struggles to rein in the light breaking through the window underneath the ornate ceiling. Target exposure is accurate and stable down to low light. While the Pixel 3 isn't nearly as flashy as its newer sibling, it's still plenty capable these days and should get you through another year of use just fine. Devices that you purchase from our retail partners are locked for 60 days after activation. You will find saving graces with the camera performance, display, and design, but at the end of the day, it ultimately comes down to your willingness to put up with the battery woes. The Pixel 4 also feature the Pixel Neural Core and Knowles 8508A audio processor. The included Applicator Tool makes it easy to install your screen protector without any bubbles or bumps. That means just about anyone, -- from a curious child to a jealous partner to a cop trying to access your phone without your consent -- could unlock your phone without much difficulty. Want to see some serifs on your text? Behind the black border is an array of robust sensors, allowing for a couple of noteworthy features: face unlock and Motion Sense gestures. On a 90Hz screen, it's refreshing 90 frames every second. Unfortunately, I can't say the same about the batteries on these devices. Sophisticated software processing and computational photography in previous Pixel cameras has helped Google smartphones rank well in our tests. All you can really go on are the results — and they speak for themselves. There's a short delay between the audio and the caption, because the Pixel 4's Neural Core is transcribing what it hears in real time. Upon the Pixel 4's launch, Smooth Display mode was set to. Astrophotography is one of the many features that make Pixel one of the best low-light cameras in the galaxy. Just a reminder: We did a deep dive on Android 10 earlier this year, so be sure to check out our full review for a better sense of the update's biggest changes. If you really wanted to, you could force the phones to run at 90Hz all the time, but you're going to kill your battery. Say hello to Motion Sense, the most interesting thing Google has done with a smartphone in years. Noise is very well-controlled in all light conditions down to low light, with very low levels of visible and noise. Are you tired of those classic blue accents? This wasn't necessarily a bad idea; after all, differences in refresh rate become harder to see when the screen is dim. This is the Android phone for me, and I'm willing to live with its flaws. Thankfully all versions of the phone have bodies framed by a treated aluminum enclosure that feels sort of like rubber, making them less slippery than last year's models. This revolutionary surface treatment disperses the oil from your fingertips to keep your screen clean. At least this time around, there are technical justifications for the bulky forehead, but we'll dive into those later. You can see in our indoor backlit portrait that the Pixel 4 has done a good job of lighting up the face and wall, but at the expense of more noise compared to the P30 Pro and the S10 5G. Live Caption is a powerful tool that leverages the Pixel 4's artificial intelligence in a useful way. To test out the limitations of Super Res Zoom, I closed in on carvings adorning the library's facade. Most of the time, as long as you keep your hand between an inch and a foot away from the Pixel's forehead, the Soli radar responds to correctly. Image credit: Tom's Guide And funky is the best way I can articulate the Pixel 4's vibe. Images are slightly underexposed in low-light conditions tested in the lab, but shots are generally usable down to 5 lux, with acceptable brightness and good contrast. It serves the same core purpose of the Pixel 4's face unlock, the only difference being you need to put your finger on the back of the phone. In many cases, it's noticeably faster than on the Pixel 3 because Google managed to shrink some of its massive speech recognition and understanding models so they fit on the device. The overall Video score is derived from performance and results across a range of attributes in the same way as the Photo score: Exposure 87 , Color 92 , Autofocus 95 , Texture 61 , Noise 86 , Artifacts 90 , and Stabilization 94. And its premium one-piece construction defends against drops at heights of up to 10 feet. Since this is Google we're talking about, the captions are generally very accurate, but it's not quite perfect. But its inclusion is nevertheless appreciated and reinforces that 90 Hz should be the standard for flagships in the future. I've been talking a lot about software because Google has always been better at crafting code than building hardware. Google Pixel 4 video clips show good exposure and effective stabilization during panning shots. The Pixel 4 doesn't manipulate the white balance as heavily, but it does double down on the shadows, leaving less detail in darker regions of the frame. Try a different location, or pick it up in-store. Yet I liked the effect, and users who fancy a more realistic tint can switch to the Natural or Boosted color profiles in the Pixel's settings. Oh, and when you go to pick up your phone, the Soli radar will see your hand coming and prompt the phone for a Face Unlock since neither Pixel 4 has a fingerprint sensor. While it's about a tenth of an inch taller than the 5. Pixel 4 software and special features Like you'd expect from a Google phone, the Pixel 4 launches with Android 10 and will be supported with updates until 2022. Google kicked out something special this time around with the Pixel 4. They even have super-fast screens, so the things you do on them just look better. Low-light performance is slightly better here, too, thanks to the extra light that the wider aperture lets through. Base storage is a concern, and the screen, while very pretty, is also very dim when you put it next to the best offerings from Apple and Samsung. Overall, the system is very fast, which brings us to the Pixel 4's other party piece: Motion Sense. Details both on the subject and in the background are generally well-maintained, aside from some evident on moving subjects. For those that may not be familiar, most smartphones have a display with a 60Hz refresh rate, meaning that 60 frames of the display are refreshing every second. But the way Motion Sense enhances Face Unlock is probably Google's cleverest use of the feature. They're more different than you might think, too. Get a full comparison between the. My experience has been essentially painless, but your experience could be very different. Along with being able to buy the phones unlocked, you can also get them on all major U. Ringing artifacts also persist in outdoor zoom shots generally, and sometimes we found faces to be out of focus. In addition to face unlock, Soli also enables Motion Sense gestures. To top it all off, you feel a nice little haptic thump when the unlock attempt is successful. It's a very disappointing decision, given the Pixel 4's phenomenal imaging. Excellent results for video noise, well-managed in all conditions, as well as video color with pleasant white balance and vivid rendering, are its key strengths. Google's smartphones have long been renowned for their cameras, but the best thing about the Pixel 4 is that it's about so much more than the photos you can take with it. Techies will be happy with their upgrade, but if the Pixel 3 is still doing right by you, don't feel like you need to replace it. Google Pixel 4 Google Pixel 3 Operating System Android 10 Android 10 Display 5. Neither model includes a fingerprint reader: using a dot projector, infrared emitters and cameras along the top of the device is the only biometric authentication method offered by the Pixel 4. That also allows for a bigger battery, but other than that, these are basically the same. The Pixel 4's astrophotography mode is able to 16 exposures, each with an aperture time of 15 seconds. Add in that this photo was taken in the dark, using Night Sight, and it's remarkable how Google has been able to overcome hardware limitations that have quelled the rest of the industry using computational photography pretty much alone. Dynamic range is fairly wide, but not as good as the best devices, and we observed some highlight clipping in high-contrast scenes. All you really need to know is that it's the one you're going to use most often, and it's very similar to the one Google used in last year's Pixel, just with a wider aperture and better dynamic range. Color rendering is generally very nice, with accurate and stable white balance. The Twinkle Case is wireless charging compatible, so you can start fueling up your smartphone on contact without removing it from its case. The iPhone 11 demolished both, at 3,251. These gestures allow you to perform specific functions of the Pixel 4 by waving your hand over the screen, such as silencing alarms, dismissing phone calls, and controlling media playback in supported apps. There's a seamless interplay between the optical advantage of that second camera and the moment when Super Res Zoom kicks in. The implementation is right out of the gate, but in its current state, Motion Sense allows you to wave your hand over the Pixel 4 to silence alarms, dismiss incoming calls, and skip through songs in supported media apps. Let's say you're scrolling through this Pixel 4 review on a Pixel 4 -- how meta. Even now, I can never predict if a flick of the wrist in front of the Pixels will actually do what I want on the first try. The battery life is mediocre at best. I doubted I could've gotten anything at all. When you're shooting with that telephoto camera, the results are nicer than what you'd get with the Pixel 3's software zoom. Starting first with face unlock, this is exactly what it sounds like. If you're itching to experience Google's latest flagship, it's a great purchase. Still, when it works, the fluidity of 90 Hz makes conventional displays feel sluggish. Unlocking Policy for Deployed Military Personnel If you are a Verizon Wireless customer in the military and receive relocation orders outside of the Verizon Coverage Area, we will unlock your device at your request, even during the 60-day-lock period following the purchase of your device. Screens with high refresh rates aren't new, but they're still relatively uncommon. It's worth keeping an eye on the Pixel 4a Where the Pixel 4 is Google's current flagship smartphone, we're expecting the company to unveil the budget-focused Pixel 4a in the coming months. The Pixel 4 isn't the first handset with a panel like this; the , also released this month, is one of several other phones that offer similar tech. Do you wish your Quick Settings icons looked different? Free return shipping label included in package. They all basically use the same parts. I don't know what else to say: I'm astounded, and I cannot wait to take the Pixel 4 somewhere far, far away from here. Combining this advanced processing with a dual-lens camera on the Pixel 4 could be really interesting. Pixel 4 display: Smooth, but far from the brightest The Pixel line has rarely been praised for its displays, but Google's fourth-generation handset goes a long way toward changing that reputation. These things shouldn't go together, but against all odds, the funkiness has grown on me. More importantly, the Pixel 4 improves on what the Pixel 3 achieved in just about every way that matters. That includes the iPhone 11 Pro, which took nearly 10 seconds to respond to a simple alarm command. When we enlarged both images, it became clear that Google levies significant noise reduction on solid colors, particularly within the signs themselves. For the first time, Google is offering its phone through all major carriers in the U. If you purchase a 4G Phone-in-a-Box from our retail partners, you should review the back of the box to determine the lock period applicable to that device. The Pixel 4 has a sizable display bezel by 2019 standards, and there's a reason for that. You'd never believe these two photos were taken at the same time of day based on the difference in lighting. Sounds great, I guess, but what does that actually mean? ² It's great for when you're driving, cooking or enjoying your favorite tacos. Right out of the gate, we need to warn you about the phones' battery life. In fact, much like its predecessor, the Pixel 4 rejects most of the tech industry's notions of what constitutes thoughtful design. Flipping the Pixel 4 over, you'll also find something we've never before seen on a Pixel device — multiple rear cameras. This isn't the first Android phone to offer a face unlock feature, but Google's going a step beyond most companies. The and have it, as do gaming-focused devices like the and the. So you'd imagine Google would have increased the size of the battery, right? It even modifies earlier words and punctuation based on contextual cues that become evident later.。 。 。 。 。
